Obruni Papa
"An art school Borat, in the tradition of Russell Brand’s “African Child.” David Kagan—a white, NYU-trained performance artist—jets off to Ghana to record an African pop album. Through confessionals and fly on the wall footage, Obruni Papa tells the story of Kagan’s self-centered journey, as well as that of his stony-faced Ghanaian collaborators. Self-penned songs sprinkled intermittently throughout. Kagan critically engages with the dubious practice of privileged artists visiting the third world for inspiration, authenticity, and cheap labor and rent."
